A strange coincidence with the EU in or out vote at present.
This photograph is of the Common Market Tournament “Fanfare for Europe” which was held on 12th January 1973 in the Ethel Ryley Sports Hall of Bolton Institute of Technology. It involved players from all European Economic Community (EEC) countries and held in conjunction with the United Kingdom Celebrations for the entry into the European Community.
The line up Stefano Bosi (Italy), Alan Griffith (Wales), Bert Van de Helm (Holland), Nicky Jarvis (England), Jean Krier (Luxembourg), Jimmy Langan (Eire), Denis Neale (England), Claus Pederson (Denmark), Jacques Secretin (France), Trevor Taylor (England), Norbert Van de Walle (Belgium). Missing from the line up is Hans Micheiloff (Federal Germany) who failed to make it to the opening ceremony.
Denis Neale won the tournament beating Jacques Secretin in the final to take home the £100 prize money and the British European Airways commemorative trophy.
Further details are in the February 1973 issue of Table Tennis News which can be found on the website.
