Young Liam Harris is proving a force to be reckoned with in Division Three of the Clacton & District League, producing a fifth unbeaten performance of the season in Nomads Lynx’s drawn match with Nomads Caracals.
The 12-year old star-of-the-future enjoyed excellent wins over experienced players Chris Jones and Denise Thompson, the closest being a 3-2 (11-5, 8-11, 13-11, 7-11, 11-5) victory against Thompson.
Dave Harris and Cameron Cini won one each for the Lynx whilst, for the Caracals, Jones and Thompson took a pair apiece and combined to beat Cini and Liam Harris, the first doubles the Lynx have lost in the current campaign.
There were close 6-4 scorelines in the other two results from the division.
Dan Still stayed undefeated, and Maci Harvey picked up one point for Brotherhood J, but that was as good as it got for their side who were edged out by Windsor Kites. Carl Hubbard and Chris Simson took a couple each for the Kites, and Mick Simson one. But the scoreline might easily have been reversed, with the Kites taking two matches that went close in five, Chris Simson defeating Harley Wood 11-8 in the fifth and Mick Simson beating the same unfortunate player 14-12 in the fifth.
In a match between two potential promotion contenders, Mark Beckham took three and Paul Metcalf two as Brotherhood G defeated Windsor Penguins. Debra Found won a couple for the losers, with Jackie Bunce and Paul Dale chipping in with one each.
Nomads Panthers look unstoppable in Division One and Walton B, fielding a guest player, were unlikely to halt their progress. The Panthers won 10-0, John Hatley, Colin Webber and, making a first appearance of the season, Gill Locke all unbeaten. The closest match was the doubles, Hatley and Webber defeating Mark Gale and Paul Meikle 11-8 in the decider.
Windsor Eagles are getting into gear nicely and they were also 10-0 victors, this against Brotherhood D. Sue Welham was their best player on the night. Gary Cattermole and Phil Smith also took hat-tricks but Cattermole struggled before beating Grant Sharpe 11-7 in the decider, as did Smith with an even tighter 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 14-12, 5-11, 11-9) scoreline against Russell Hillier.
Brotherhood C are another side moving up the table, this week overcoming Nomads Lions 9-1. Oli Reynolds and Abi Peshkar took trebles and Alan Burgess two. Reynolds and Burgess took the doubles in the only match which went the distance, beating Ethan Lloyd and Arran Hutchinson 3-2 (6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8). Hutchinson got the Lions’ point.
Brotherhood B were 8-2 winners over Windsor Kestrels, Andy Warner unbeaten, and John Cleasby and Martin Edwards taking a pair apiece. The Kestrels won the last two matches of the evening to avoid the whitewash, Dave Martin playing well to defeat Edwards, and John Harvey getting the better of Cleasby 3-2 (11-8, 12-14, 11-5, 13-15, 11-5).
Three for Greg Green, and two each for Felipe Rodriguez and Martin Hogg, were the basis of Windsor Condors’ 8-2 success against Windsor Hawks. Andy Vincent beat Rodriguez and Hogg for the Hawks’ two points.
In Division Two Lawford defeated Brotherhood F 8-2. Richard Spence and Paul Hewitt took trebles, although Spence was taken to five by both Lee Allen and Barry Allen. For Brotherhood, Lee Allen beat John Colvin in three-straight but it was more of a tester for Barry Allen who defeated the same player 12-10 in the fifth. Unusually, Lawrence Torr failed to take a point from the match, the first time this has happened for 18 months.
It was also 8-2 as Brotherhood I beat Walton E, Paul Alden winning 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12) against Daniel Young to clinch a hard-fought maximum. Graham Parkes and Fred Gallone won two each for the winners, as did Young for the losers.
Eleven-year old Ollie Rampton took the honours for Windsor Magpies against Windsor Harriers but his unbeaten three were not enough to prevent his side going down 6-4. The closest match saw Rampton edge past Isabel Barton 11-8 in the fifth. The Magpies also took the doubles, Rampton and Kayley Rodriguez beating Ferdy Rodriguez and Jenny Higgins in four.
Windsor Buzzards enjoyed an unexpected 6-4 victory over Brotherhood H, their third 6-4 win in as many weeks. No player stayed unbeaten but the Buzzards had the good fortune to take the three matches which went the distance. For the Buzzards, Dan Malinowski beat Tricia Salter and Woody Fitzpatrick in five, Ray Chillingworth’s two included an 11-6 in the decider win over Frank Burbidge, while their number one Pete Bloomfield picked up a solitary win over Tricia Salter. Burbidge and Fitzpatrick won two singles each for Brotherhood.
Walton D are surely one of the League’s most convivial teams but their position at the bottom of the table is looking somewhat perilous, this week losing 9-1 to Nomads Jaguars. Andy Cawley and Mike Wellum each took a maximum, and Kevin Hume two. John Bonner’s win against Hume in the first match of the evening was the only success for Walton although two matches did go to five, Hume against Toni-Hayhow-Khan, and Cawley and Wellum in taking the doubles 11-7 in the fifth against Bonner and Hayhow-Khan.
* The first match in the Division Three Handicap Challenge saw a 6-3 win for Nomads Pumas against Nomads Leopards in a Group One encounter. For the Pumas, Alan Dockerill won his two singles, Lionel Goddard one and, with John Bowers, the three players combined to take all three doubles played. Roger McNaughton won two singles and Dave Wright one for the Leopards.
