Heacham TTC have given club stalwart Malcolm Diggins their Volunteer of the Year award.

Play was temporarily stopped during a league match at the club in Norfolk in order to present a certificate to Malcolm, plus a birthday card signed by all as it co-incided with his 75th birthday.

Malcolm is General Secretary of the club and Janice Campbell made the presentation.

Janice reports that although Malcolm was unaware of the surprise and initially frowned upon the breach of protocol in stopping play, once he realised he was very happy.

Malcolm has been a key volunteer at the club for many years and, prior to the presentation, had set out the tables, nets and surrounds for the league match. The surrounds were all made by hand by himself.

The award was given under the umbrella of Table Tennis England’s Pride of Table Tennis Awards, which honour volunteers, officials, coaches and personalities who give so much to our sport.

Clubs are being encouraged to give their own Volunteer of the Year Award to a deserving member and to also nominate them for our overall Club Volunteer of the Year accolade. All nominations receive a personalised certificate from Table Tennis England, as well as entry into the national awards.
