Having hit the headlines last week it’s Maldon A who take the top billing again in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

What a good performance they produced. Alex Abbott, Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden produced a superb display to beat Liberal A 10-0. Liberal weren’t at full strength but their team of Andrew Huckson, Gary Cattermole and Sam Hume is still a good one. On this occasion they were “whitewashed“.   Alex Abbott defeated twice Chelmsford M&G Investments Under 21 Singles Champion Sam Hume 13-11, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9 whilst John Poysden beat Hume 6-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8. Abbott also beat Gary Cattermole, a player he has lost to in the past, convincingly 11-5, 11-5, 11-3. Trevor Lloyd’s rich vein of form continues and he has now recorded 15 wins out of 15.

Liberal A fared better against Rawreth A and they ran out 6-4 winners. County Junior stars Sam Hume and Gracie Edwards both won twice although all three Liberal players missed out against an in-form Reece Seddon, the 2017 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Doubles winner. Gracie Edwards excelled here. She beat both Babul McLeod 11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 14-12 and Mike Hayes 4-11, 11-6, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7. Babul McLeod in turn made his mark with a fine 11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10 success against Gary Cattermole.

Liberal C scored their third win of the Season in division two. Adrian Pitt, Andrew Huckson and Hannah Pitt defeated OCs 9-1. Steve Northcott was on target for the Old Chelmsfordians side with a 14-16, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 win over Hannah Pitt.

Danbury C stay third. They beat Hatfield Peverel A 6-4. Gary Ward won his three singles for Hatfield Peverel whilst Chris Buer and Ian Whiteside both bagged two wins for Danbury C.

Maldon B are going to be very hard to beat in division three. They moved into pole position by beating Chelmsford E 7-3. Hamish Innes and Steve Scholz were both undefeated with Scholz really hitting top form in this match. Steve Scholz beat Keith Martin (11-5, 11-2, 11-9), Richard Baxter (11-8, 11-1, 11-4) and Connor Payne (11-6, 12-10, 13-15, 11-7) – a really impressive hat-trick. With Ciaran Whelan in their squad and playing regularly they must be favourites.

Maldon C were 7-3 winners over Hatfield Peverel C. Twice M&G Investments Ladies Singles Champion Dawn Baldry excelled. She notched up a most impressive hat- trick with wins over Bob Garson (11-5, 11-3, 11-6), Trevor Collin (11-6, 11-5, 11-6) and Dave Carter (11-6, 11-8, 11-5). Very sharp shooting indeed !

Chelmsford F stay top in division five. They notched up a 9-1 success against Highwood B. Ian Austin and Jon Dyson were both undefeated whilst Melanie Bonnett picked up the win for the losers with a four-game victory over Jason Clark.

Chelmsford H beat Anglia Ruskin University 6-4. Anglia Ruskin University Captain Taku Nerutanga won his three singles to give the University side the edge. He beat Harry Buckle 11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-9 in the closest game of the night.

Galleywood C are the Champions of CLICK division 1A. Rio Tiplizki and Aidan Noguchi won the title in style with a convincing 5-0 win over Danbury Demons.

The match in CLICK division 1B between Danbury Griffins and Chelmsford Tigers was a close one with the Tigers coming out on top 3-2. Ryan>Armstrong beat both Will Radcliffe (11-6, 6-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8) and Callum Caldwell (11-9, 11-8, 11-9).

In the Handicap Knock-Out Cup the “specialists” Hatfield Peverel A (Gary Ward, John Gagg and John Parodi) were 5-3 winners over Chelmsford H. Gary Ward (handicap of 68) secured their victory by beating Harry Buckle (43) 21-16, 21-17 to seal the success. Jacqui Smith (46) pushed Ward close before succumbing 19-21, 20-22.

Danbury D (Eamon Hall, Conor Hall and Ben Porter) advanced into the next round with a 5-2 victory over Writtle Excalibur B. The result that caught the eye here was the extremely odd-looking scoreline between Conor Hall (37) and Dave Moles (58) with Moles shading it 21-19, 0-21, 22-20. Conor Hall sealed the Danbury victory with a most comprehensive looking 21-11, 21-5 win over Malcolm Storey (57). Chelmsford J (Dusan Doszkoty / Ryan Gooday / Jamie
Dowsett) were quick-fire winners over Buttsbury. Ryan Gooday used his first division pedigree and fine all-round game to good effect beating James Green (39) 21-19, 21-13 and Alex Headley (46) 21-12, 21-18.
