Brighton Table Tennis Club (BTTC) is nominated for two awards in the 2015 Active Sussex Sports Awards.

The club is one of three shortlisted for Grand Hotel Club of the Year award and club volunteer, Gary Vidgeon, is in contention for the Sussex County FA Volunteer of the Year award.

The only Brighton sports club to make the awards short-list this year, BTTC goes from strength to strength and is National Table Tennis Club of the Year 2014.

Working in partnership with the Grace Eyre Foundation, this year 13 Brighton players took part in tournaments for players with disabilities in Malmo and Berlin and Swedish and German players competed in a return tournament in Brighton in July.

The club also provides sessions for pupils from The Virtual School for Children in Care and for the Over-50s. It offers Women Only sessions and works in City College, four secondary schools and three primary schools.

Brighton Table Tennis Club’s long-term ambition to find and secure a permanent base with access seven days a week became a reality in September when it moved into a 12-table venue in the heart of Brighton’s Kemptown.

Gary Vidgeon was nominated for Sussex County FA Volunteer of the Year
for the huge amount of work he did to make the new venue ready for use as well as his continuing contribution to the club.

Tim Holtam, BTTC Chief Executive, said: “We run a friendly and welcoming environment for people of all ages and skill levels who want to play table tennis, and having the new club has allowed us to increase our community contribution. Plans are in hand, for example, to start sessions for young people from the LGBT community and for homeless people.

“The club also offers a pathway into local and national league competitions for juniors and adults, plus development opportunities for members who want to coach. It also supports the personal development of young people, and one of our greatest successes has been providing jobs by training young people to become coaches in their own communities.”

More than 1,000 people now play table tennis in the Brighton every week. During the summer more than 12,000 people played table tennis in parks, squares, offices and other informal spaces across the city in sessions that offered a friendly introduction to table tennis, the club and the coaches.
