Liam Pitchford picked up two superb victories in the latest round of Champions League matches, including sinking world No 10 Wong Chun Ting.

Pitchford kicked off his club Hennebont’s tie against Dzialdowo with a tight 3-2 win over Slovakia’s Wang Yang, ranked just below him at No 66 in the world.

He saw his opponent twice level the score but the Englishman took the decisive fifth to win 3-2 (11-7, 8-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-8).

Defeats for Cedric Nuytinck and Quentin Robinot meant Hennebont were 2-1 down when Pitchford took to the table again against Wong, but he pulled off a brilliant 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7) victory over his Hong Kong opponent to level the match score.

However, Nuytinck was beaten by Wang Yang as Dzialdowo claimed the tie 3-2 – though Hennebont remain top of the group with two wins from three ties to date.

It was a second career win for Pitchford against a top 10 player, having previously beaten Vladimir Samsonov, ranked No 9 at the time.
