Sam Walker turned in some impressive performances to reach the quarter-finals of the Polish Open.

The English No 3 beat two players ranked higher than him earlier in the tournament but could not make it a hat-trick as he was defeated 4-2 by world No 126 Kirill Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan.

Earlier, world No 163 Walker came from 3-1 down to defeat world No 138 Alexey Liventsov of Russia 12-10 in the deciding seventh set of his last-16 clash. Previous to that, he picked up an impressive 4-2 victory over world No 81 Daniel Habesohn of Austria in the first round and followed up by defeating France’s Andrea Landrieu, ranked No 169, 4-1.

Meanwhile, world No 62 Liam Pitchford reached the last 16. Seeded sixth, he wasted little time in defeating two opponents 4-0 – Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro (No 151) and Lam Siu Hang (No 108) of Hong Kong – in the first two rounds.

But he was edged out in the last 16 by Quentin Robinot (FRA, 72) in a deciding set, the Frenchman claiming the seventh 11-9 having twice seen Pitchford come from behind to level the match.

Tin-Tin Ho, currently ranked No 205, overcame the 148th-ranked Alex Galic of Slovenia to reach the last 32 of the Women’s Singles but was defeated by Li Qian of Poland. Kelly Sibley, ranked 197, lost in the last 64 to world No 130 Sarah De Nutte of Luxembourg.

Ho also got through to the quarter-finals of the under-21s, where she lost to Audrey Zarif of France, while Tom Jarvis was defeated in the last 32 of the under-21 men’s by Ng Pak Ham of Hong Kong.

Jarvis & Pitchford lost their last-16 clash in the men’s doubles 3-1 to top seeds Jiang Tianyi & Lam Siu Hang of Hong Kong.
