Ormesby bounced back from an opening defeat in the Premier Division to comfortably beat Fusion and head to second in the league after two rounds.

The defending champions fielded a team of Sining Zhang, Thomas Rayner and Helshan Weerasinghe to welcome Fusion to the north-east.

Zhang got proceedings underway in Middlesbrough beating Robert Pelc in three. Weerasinghe made it 2-0 as he beat Joseph Hee to put Ormesby in control heading into the doubles.

Zhang and Weerasinghe combined to make it 3-0 beating Pelc and Smith in three to leave Fusion needing a win to get into the fixture.

Thomas Rayner, making his Premier Division debut, stepped up to the table to face Smith. It was a tight affair with Smith edging out the 15-year-old debutant in four sets, offering some hope to his Fusion teammates that a comeback was possible.

Zhang had other ideas as he beat Hee in three to make it 4-1 and seal the victory for Ormesby.

Rayner then managed to get a win on the board, completing a three-set victory over Pelc.

The final tie produced the only five-set match of the fixture. Weerasinghe and Smith shared the first four sets meaning the healthy crowd were treated to a final-set decider. Weerasinghe wrapped up the final set 11-8 to secure a resounding 6-1 victory for Ormesby.

Premier Division action returns this weekend for Round 3 as Archway Peterborough host North Ayrshire, Urban head to Fusion and BATTS take on Ormesby. Urban will also face North Ayrshire on Sunday in a rearranged Round 7 fixture.
