Danny Lawrence, Adam Harrison and Sam Mabey all bowed out of the Junior Boys’ event at the Spanish Youth Open in the last 32.

Mabey featured in the closest match and had one foot in the last 16 when he led 3-1, but opponent Jorge Costa of Portugal came back to seal a 4-3 victory (9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-8).

Lawrence lost 4-1 to Martin Allegro of Belgium (12-14, 11-8, 5-11, 6-11, 13-15), while Stephan Shaposhnikov (Russia) was too string for Harrison, winning 4-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-8, 14-12).

In the previous round, Harrison beat Eduardo Gonzalez of the host nation 4-2 (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 14-12, 11-9), while Lawrence withstood a comeback by Italy’s Carlo Rossi to win 4-3 (5-11, 11-8, 11-3, 18-16, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9). Mabey was handed a bye into the second knockout round.

In the group stages, Lawrence, who came into the squad when Helshan Weerasinghe became unavailable, won all three matches to top Group 16, while Harrison and Mabey won two each but both progressed on countback as group winners.

Mabey saw off Nils Hohmeier of Germany 3-1 and Chiorri Costantinos of Italy 3-0 in Group One, but went down in five to Diego Sanchez of the host nation.

Meanwhile, in Group 15, Harrison was impressive in beating Mate Bruckner of Hungary and Alberto Lillo of Spain 3-0, but was beaten 3-1 by Belgium’s Thibaut Darcis.

Lawrence vanquished Jose Goncalves of Portugal and Miguel Chamorro of Spain by 3-1 scorelines and saw off Abdulaziz Mohd (Qatar) 3-0.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Boys’ Doubles, Harrison and Lawrence were beaten 3-1 in the first knockout round by Turkish pair Ibrahim Gunduz and Ziver Gunduz (4-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-13).

Mabey, partnering Scotland’s Christopher Wheeler, received a bye into the last 32, where they were beaten by Slovakian pair Peter Ingemar and Valuch Alexander 3-0 (13-15, 5-11, 3-11).
