Tom Jarvis won all four matches on day one of the European Youth Championships in Portugal to help England’s Junior Boys to two victories – including over top seeds France.

Having seen off Slovenia 3-1, England – the second seeds in the group – defeated France 3-2 thanks to Jarvis’ double and a 3-1 victory by Luke Savill in the deciding tie.

It means victory over Poland today would see England top their group.

Charlotte Bardsley picked up a good win against Anastasia Bondareva for the Cadet Girls’ team but it was not enough as opponents Germany won the first match 3-1.

But Bardsley and Megan Gidney hit back to defeat Greece 3-0 and next play Czech Republic today.
