At the inaugural European U21 Championships, Tom Jarvis reached the quarter-finals in the men’s singles and in the men’s doubles with partner Helshan Weerasinghe. Whilst Tin-Tin Ho was eliminated in the last 16.
Singles
Tom Jarvis’s great run has come to an end at the quarter-finals of the men’s singles.
In the last 16, Jarvis defeated Tomas Polansky (CZE) 4-2 (12-10, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8).
However, the England Leopard’s player could not continue his run of form against Deni Kozul (SLO).
He lost to the competitions #23 seed 1-4 (3-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 9-11) in the quarter final.
Earlier in the day, Tin-Tin Ho’s unbeaten run of six matches also came to an end.
She was been knocked out of the competition after losing 2-4 (7-11, 1-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 7-11) to Lisa Lung (BEL) in the last 16.
Doubles
Tom Jarvis and Helshan Weerasinghe fought hard, but were eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals.
In the last 16, the English pair gained a strong 3-2 victory (10-12, 12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6) over the danish pairing of Tobias Rasmussen and Claus Nielsen.
Seeded #19 for the competition, it was the second time Jarvis and Weerasignhe have overturned higher seeded opponents.
On Thursday, they beat Diogo Chen (POR) and Aliaksandr Khanin (BLR) 3-0 (12-10, 11-2, 11-6).
In the Quarter-Final, the English pair faced arguably the competitions strongest pairing of Tomislav Pucar (CRO) and Bence Majoros (HUN).
At 2-2, it was either pairings to win, however it was Pucar and Majoros who came out on top – 3-2 (11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 2-11, 11-3).
The competition
The European U21 Championships is a new competition, introduced by the European Table Tennis Union to help players making the transition from Junior to Senior status.
The top 56 men and top 56 women in the European rankings were been invited to compete in singles and doubles competitions.
