English interest in the singles at the Swedish Open ended today with defeats for Andrew Baggaley, Paul Drinkhall and Tom Jarvis – but Drinkhall & Liam Pitchford reached the main draw of the doubles.
Baggaley was the first to exit, 4-1 in the first preliminary round at the hands of Czech player Pavel Sirucek, ranked No 142 in the world.
Drinkhall and Jarvis were given byes into the second preliminary round but went no further – Drinkhall beaten in a decider by Zhai Yujia of Denmark (ranked 124) and group-stage hero Jarvis in four straight by world No 55 Jang Woojin of South Korea.
In the women’s doubles, Tin-Tin Ho & Charlotte Carey of Wales won a tight first preliminary match against Magdalena Sikorska of Poland & Serbia’s Andrea Todorovic.
However, they were then beaten in three by Miyu Kato & Miyu Nagasaki in the second preliminary round.
The men’s doubles also began today, with victory for Drinkhall & Liam Pitchford but defeat for David McBeath & Jarvis in the first preliminary round. Drinkhall & Pitchford then beat an Iranian pair to reach the main draw. They will play Indian duo Sharath Kamal Achanta & Sathiyan Gnanasekaran on Thursday afternoon.
