China and are on course for a clean sweep of Rio gold medals after booking their place in the men’s team final with victory over South Korea.

Zhang Jike did not have things all his own way in the first match, taking all five games to get the better of Youngsik Jeoung 3-2 (13-15, 13-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4), but Ma Long thrashed Saehyuk Joo 3-0 (11-1, 11-4, 11-4) and Zhang & Xu Xin completed victory against Jeoung & Sangsu Lee 3-0 (11-8, 12-10, 11-6).

China will face Japan in tomorrow’s gold medal match after the latter overcame Germany 3-1. Dimitrij Ovtcharov got the Europeans off to a fast start by defeating Maharu Yoshimura 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 11-3) but Jun Mizutani levelled with a three-straight victory over Timo Boll (11-9, 11-5, 12-10).

Yoshimura & Koki Niwa won the doubles against Boll & Bastian Steger 3-1 (11-5, 13-15, 11-4, 11-5) and Mizutani was too good for Steger in a 3-0 scoreline (11-5, 11-4, 11-4).

The bronze medal match between Germany and Korea is at 3pm UK time tomorrow, with the gold medal match at 11.30pm.

Meanwhile, today sees the women’s medal matches, with Singapore facing Japan for bronze at 3pm and China meeting Germany to decide gold and silver at 11.30pm.

It follows a dramatic semi-final in which Germany beat Japan 3-2, sealed by Han Ying’s 3-2 (7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 6-11, 11-9) victory over Ai Fukuhara.
