Andrew Baggaley’s two-year hold on the World Championship of Ping Pong was ended in the last 16 at Alexandra Palace today.

The Englishman was beaten in three sets by Lubomir Pistej of Slovakia, who claimed a 15-14, 8-15, 15-10 victory.

The event was won by Yan Weihao of China, who beat Germany’s Alexander Flemming 3-1 (10-15, 15-6, 15-11, 15-10) in the final.

Chris Doran was the sole English player to reach the quarter-finals after he defeated Julius Esposo of the Philippines 15-5, 15-6.

However, Doran’s run ended in the last eight at the hands of Spain’s Marc Duran by a scoreline of 15-14, 15-9. Duran had earlier beaten Gavin Rumgay in three in the last 16.

Matt Ware, Martin Gunn and Andrew Rushton were eliminated in the first stage.
