Pitchford’s incentive is to join England colleague Paul Drinkhall and former England coach – now Technical Director – Alan Cooke on that milestone, as well as a legend from the earlier days of the Championships, Denis Neale. Des Douglas is out in front with 11 Men’s Singles titles.

Pitchford & Drinkhall are also hot favourites as a pair to win the Men’s Doubles for the seventh time and Pitchford said: “It would be good to get No 6, that would put me level with Paul and Cookie and that’s the motivation. Me and Paul will go for another doubles title as well, hopefully.

“It’s always nice to win the Nationals. It’s nice to play in England in front of a home crowd and show people in England that we can play good table tennis.”
