Ethan Walsh lost out to the top seed after reaching the last 16 of the Cadet Boys’ Singles at the Portugal Junior & Cadet Open.
The 13-year-old from Stevenage won two of his three group matches to reach the knockout stages and then beat Arnau Roca of Spain 3-1 (11-5, 11-8, 12-14, 11-7) in the last 32.
That set up a tie against Sharon Alguetti of the USA and Walsh fought hard against the top seed before being defeated 3-1 (7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 9-11).
Harry Dai and Shayan Siraj also reached the knockout stages in Loule but were eliminated in the first round, while James Smith and Sam Chesterman went out in the qualifying rounds and had to settle for the consolation singles, where Smith reached the quarter-finals and Chesterman the last 16.
Chesterman and his partner Tal Israeli of Israel were the best performers in the doubles, winning two matches to reach the quarter-finals.
In the team event, Walsh and Harry Dai, playing as England A, reached the last 16, as did Chesterman, who was playing alongside Nicolas Degros of Belgium. The England B line-up of Smith and Siraj went out in the groups.
In the Junior Boys’ Singles, Helshan Weerasinghe, seeded No 2, was eliminated in the last 16 by 11th seed Batuhan Ulucak of Turkey, who surprisingly went on to reach the final.
