Tributes have been paid to Dr Alan Burgess, a top Cambridge scientist, who died on December 27th aged 78.

Dr Burgess, an Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College and former head of the Atomic and Astrophysics group at Cambridge University, was also a keen table tennis player and coach.

Ken Muhr, a friend for over 40 years, said: “Alan was a left-handed table tennis player for Cambridge YMCA and a coach in the Cambridge League. He helped me in coaching in the early ’70s, and then coached with the late Pat O’Byrne. His son Neil, now Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at University College London, played table tennis for Cambridgeshire Juniors.”

He added: “I count Alan, a modest, interesting and kindly man, as a real friend for over 40 years, and am very sad at his passing.”
