Three teams from Division One and one from Division Two have made it through to the semi-finals of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League’s Handicap Knock-Out Cup.

Second Division Brotherhood D are the only side outside the top-flight to survive this week’s Round Four matches but, arguably, they had the most straightforward task, beating the sole remaining Division Three side Nomads Lynx 5-1.

But it was no stroll in the park, Brotherhood winning all three matches that went close in five, the closest being Russell Hillier’s
(-6) 7-11, 0-11, 11-6, 11-7, 14-12 victory over Vic Little (+1).

Both Hillier and Adam Wilkin remained undefeated with Barry Jones’ (+1) 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 win over Paul Alden (-6) the losers’ only success.

Walton A disposed of the only other Division Two team left in the competition, Windsor Kestrels, with a 5-2 victory, Neil Crook and Matthew Watson unbeaten on the night, Walton skipper Colin Dearman surprisingly losing both his singles.

In the first of two all-Division One clashes, Windsor Condors took their semi-final place courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Red Triangle A, Gary Young undefeated.

However, the scoreline might have been much closer, Colin Stallwood (-3) just beating Paul Meikle (+1) 11-9 in the decider and John Pattrick (-1) defeating Jason Gale (+1) by the same score.

The last of the quarter-final matches see-sawed throughout, Red Triangle B eventually overcoming Windsor Eagles 5-4 thanks to a last-gasp doubles win, 12-10, 11-9, 11-4, for Martin Hogg and Gavin Price over Fred Button and Sue Welham in scratch match.

Price won both his singles and one doubles whilst Hogg took one singles and both doubles.

The draw for the semi-finals is Walton A v Windsor Condors, Red Triangle B v Brotherhood D, the matches to be played during week beginning 4th April. The final takes place on Tuesday 3rd May at the Brotherhood Hall, Clacton-on-Sea.

* In an all-Windsor clash in Division One of the League, the Condors were 7-3 winners over the Falcons, Colin Stallwood picking up a predictable maximum for the winners.

Felipe Rodriguez’s two for the Falcons included the scalp of John Pattrick, whilst the tightest match of the evening saw Jim Pallett of the Condors beat Annabelle Rodriguez 11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 12-14,
14-12.

In a vital relegation clash in Division Two Nomads Lions gave themselves a lifeline with a 6-4 victory against Nomads Tigers, John Wacker taking three and John Fenton two for the Lions, Doug Green picking up a couple for the Tigers.

In Division Three Brotherhood H were surprisingly easy 9-1 winners over Nomads Leopards, Gerald Batt and Tom Wilkin unbeaten, Michael Gallone playing well to defeat both Norman Jacobs and Hazel Blanche.

* The League’s premier event, the Closed Championships, takes place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April at the Coastal Academy Sports Hall. Once again, the Tournament is being sponsored by Paul Newbould Planning and Building Design Services.

Entry forms have been sent to all players. The entry qualification is seven League matches for Division One and Division Three players, and six matches for Division Two players. The closing date is Sunday 27th March. Full details are also on the League’s website.
