Tin-Tin Ho lost to a Chinese opponent in the last 16, ending British involvement at the World University Games in Naples today.

The Nottingham University student won the first game against Guo Yan but saw her opponent take the next four to seal a quarter-final place. Ho, who was seeded into the knockout stage, had beaten opponents from South Korea and France in the previous rounds.

It means the women’s team quarter-final place was the best result achieved by Great Britain at the event.

Chloe Thomas finished second in her group and went on to reach the last 32, including an impressive 4-3 (4-11, 2-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10) victory over an opponent from Hong Kong in the last 64. Emily Bolton won her group with two victories but went out in the round of 64 to an opponent from Hong Kong.

In the men’s singles, Helshan Weerasinghe reached the knockout stage as group runner-up before going out in the first round – the last 64 – to a Russian opponent. Josh Bennett and Colin Dalgleish went out in the group stage.

In the doubles, Ho matched her last-16 singles place in both the women’s and mixed events. Playing alongside Bolton in the women’s event, they got past a Saudi pair on walkover but then went out to Irina Ciobanu & Adina Diaconu of Romania.

In the mixed, Ho & Bennett came in at the last 32 and beat American opponents before going out to a Chinese pair in the last 16. Dalgleish & Thomas were eliminated in the last 64 by a South Korean combination.

Weerasinghe & Bennett also went out at the first hurdle in the Men’s Doubles, losing to Romanian opponents in the last 64.
