TEES ACTIVE STOCKTON JUNIOR 4 STAR TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Unseeded Daryl Gee from Hull and Ormesby’s Jessica Dawson took the main two titles at the Tees Active Stockton Junior 4 Star Championships at Thornaby Pavilion last weekend.

Gee won the Boys’ Singles title with impressive wins over Bradley Tuttle of Hertfordshire by 3-1 and Scotland’s Colin Dalgleish at 11-8 in the decider before reaching the final to play Jared Patel of Essex.  After a very tight first game, which Gee won 15-13, the Hull boy won the second and fourth games at 11-7 and 11-9 to take his first major title.

The top seed, Scott Barton of Scotland, lost to his national team colleague Colin Dalgleish at 11-7 in the decider whilst 3rd seed Sam Mabey of Northamptonshire was beaten by another Scottish player, Chris Wheeler, who went on to beat Tyrone Wells of Middlesex  in straight games before losing to Patel.

Jessica Dawson was dominant in the Junior Girls’ Singles.  In the semi final she used a two winged attack to beat Emily Bates of Lincolnshire, the current England No 1 Junior fresh from her successes in Poland and Sweden, in 3 straight games, all by 11-8.  In the final Jessica beat the talented Welsh girl, Angharad Phillips by 3 games to 1.

The Junior Boys’ team event was won by the OLOP Impact team consisting of Liam McTiernan and Jared Patel.  In the semi final they beat Hull St Mary’s who team consisted of Michael Fraser and Daryl Gee by 3-0 and in the final the Rugby Premier team consisting of Matthew Outhwaite and Laurence Sweeney by the same score.

The girls’ team event was won by Grantham Tornadoes consisting of Emily Bates and Angharad Phillips who beat the Ormesby team of Jessica Dawson and Maria Tsaptsinos, who replaced the injured Chloe Whyte, by 3 games to 1.

The Cadet Boys’ events were dominated by the B BATT Club from North London, with Sam Mabey beating his team mate Tyrone Wells in 3 straight games in the singles final.  Mabey beat Jack Bennett of Sussex by 3-1 in the semi whilst Wells beat Danny Lawrence of Kent by the same score in the other semi.

The B BATT team also won the Cadet team event after close matches against the Grantham Tornadoes team of Tom Jarvis and Daniel McTiernan in the semi final and against the Weald team of Danny Lawrence and Jack Bennett in the final, both won by 3 sets to 2.  Weald beat Ormesby with Chris Wheeler, Billy Forster and Alec Ward by 3-1 in the other semi.

The Cadet Girls’ Singles was won comfortably by Maria Tsaptsinos from Berkshire who beat Ella Patel of Essex in 3 straight games in the final.  The Cadet Girls’ team event winner was the Welsh team of Laura Edwards, Caitlin Williams and Kate Roberts, who beat the Ellenborough team of Eda Aydin and Katie McGlone by 3-0 after Wales had beaten the Grantham Tornadoes team of Emily Bolton and Hannah Noutch by 3-2 in the one semi final and Ellenborough had defeated Ormesby’s Kayleigh Forster and Ella Patel by 3-2 in the other.

The Mini (Under 13) Cadet Boys’ Singles was won by Tom Jarvis of Lincolnshire who beat Liam Grant of Surrey by 3-1 in the final after Jarvis had defeated Ormesby’s Alec Ward by 3-1 in the semi.  The Mini Cadet Girls’ Singles winner was Hiba Feredj of Middlesex who had a comfortable victory over Kate Nixon of Yorkshire by 3-0.

The Grade 1 Boys’ Singles was won by Chris Wheeler who came back from 2 games down to beat Sam Cowan of Middlesex by 11-6 in the decider in the final.  Wheeler beat David Thompson of South Yorkshire in the semi final in straight games whilst Cowan won by the same score against Raphael Lawanson of Surrey.

Hannah Lynch-Dawson of Ireland won the Grade 1 Girls’ after a very narrow victory over Emily Bolton 11-9 in the decider in the semi final and a 3-1 win over Ormesby’s Kayleigh Forster in the final.

The Championship was organised by the Cleveland Table Tennis Association and the main prizes were presented by the Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Paul Baker.
