James Smith’s run to the semi-finals of the consolation singles was the highlight of the Belgium Junior & Cadet Open for the seven-strong English contingent.

Smith beat two Spanish players and one from the host nation before going out to another Belgian, David Comeliau, who went on to win the competition.

Joining Smith in action in the boys’ events in Spa were Reece Chamdal and Shayan Siraj.

In the girls’ tournaments, Kate Cheer, Denise Payet, Bhavika Mistry and Emily Bolton were in action. Bolton was in the Junior event, while the other six were eligible for both Cadets and Juniors. They played singles, doubles and team events.

Cheer and Payet were the best performing team, making it out of the group stages and losing narrowly in the last 16 to France C.
