It was a family double at the recent Scunthorpe one star as Mark and Sara Short of Worksop took the Men’s and Ladies singles’ titles.
Mark just got the better of Shaquille Webb Dixon in a highly entertaining five-set thriller of a final, 12-10 in the decider, while Sara more comfortably took the Ladies’ title with Hull’s Gauri Duhan claiming the runners-up spot.
A delighted Abhijay Mishra took the largest cash prize of the day in the Prize fighter Band 1 final, defeating Mark Short in another close, hard-fought final.
Hull’s Dave Randerson made a profitable decision not to watch his local team play in the Premier League and played table tennis instead, beating Scunthorpe’s Steve Barnes in the Band 2 final and later again in the Veterans’ final.
The Band 3 final was a repeat of the previous tournament’s final with Barnsley’s Stuart Sykes beating Derbyshire’s Lucas King.
Abhijay Mishra triumphed again in a highly competitive Junior event, beating Scunthorpe’s Tom Clay in the final.
Joseph Langham Ferreira took the honours in the intermediates (over 18, under 40), defeating men’s semi-finalist Jack Dempsey in the final.
On the day, 24 different cash prizes were awarded totalling nearly £1,100. The next Scunthorpe one star open will take place on Saturday May 2, with the organising committee promising to match the prize fund again.
