The Gateshead International Stadium played host to a spectacular Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Sainsbury’s UK School Games which is being held in Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland until Sunday.

The event was a fantastic entertainment show which showcased North East England. The opening ceremony was part of the UK School Games cultural and educational programme and had 1,600 elite school aged athletes in attendance, parading in front of the assembled VIP’s and public.

The Table Tennis event started in earnest today with three rounds of the Boys and Girls Team competition and the initial rounds of the wheelchair, standing and learning difficulty events.

After the first two rounds England Midlands Boys are looking strong in group J, and England North East are battling it out with Scotland for top spot in Group K.

In the Girls groups England Midlands are in top spot in Group S and England South West are in contention with Wales for the No 1 slot.
