Danny Reed was eliminated in the group stage of the Hungarian Open today.
The 26-year-old, ranked No 203 in the world, won his opening group match against Marco Navas of Venezuela, coming back from 3-1 down – all three lost on deuce – to win 4-3.
However, he was unable to get the better of Belgium’s world No 241 Lauric Jean, who won 4-1 to top the group and advance to the knockout stage.
Reed was the only English competitor in Budapest, David McBeath having withdrawn through injury.
The event in Budapest represents the 20th anniversary of the ITTF World Tour. The first event – then part of the Pro Tour – was held in Kettering in 1996.
The inaugural men’s singles winner was Kong Linghui of China, while his compatriot Yang Ying won the women’s singles. English entrants included Carl Prean, Alan Cooke, Alex Perry, Andrea Holt, Nicola Deaton and Helen Lower.
