Five English players made it to the main draw of the Junior Boys’ Singles at the Portugal Junior & Cadet Open, but all went out at the last-64 stage.

Shayan Siraj won all three of his matches to top his pool, while James Smith, Louis Price, Ethan Walsh and Matthew Daish all picked up two victories to finish second in their respective groups.

Price, ranked fourth in his group, sealed qualification with a 3-2 victory over Benedict Watson of Wales, having earlier also won in five against Russia’s Alexey Perfilyev. Meanwhile, Daish beat the higher-ranked Abdulaziz Al-Hajaji of Qatar.

However, all five were defeated in the last 64, with Siraj going closest as he lost 4-3 (11-9, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 12-14, 8-11, 12-10) to Alexis Lebrun of France.

Thomas Rayner and the Boonyaprapa brothers, Naphat and Naphong, were all eliminated in the group stage but all had their moments. Naphong Boonyaprapa saw all his matches go to a deciding game and he won one of those to finish third in the group.

That put him into the last 16 of the consolation singles and he won that match, also in five, against Welsh Commonwealth Games medallist Josh Stacey, to set up a quarter-final today, which he lost to Portugal’s Silas Monteiro in four games.

Rayner, in his first international tournament, took at least one game in all three of his matches against opponents ranked higher than him, while Naphat Boonyaprapa took all three of his opponents to a decider.

Felix Thomis was beaten in his three group matches – though he pushed Stacey all the way before losing 11-8 in the fifth. Thomis will feature in the Cadet categories later in the tournament, as will Rayner, Price, Ben Piggott and Naphong Boonyaprapa .

In the Junior Girls’ Singles, Erin Green was defeated in her three group matches, pushing Wales’ Beth Richards to a decider. She is also in action in the Cadet event.

Green and her partner Noella Santiago of Spain lost to a Portuguese pair in the first round of the Junior Girls’ Doubles, but there was success for some of the boys’ pairs.

Notably, Naphong Boonyaprapa & Thomis pulled off two big victories, including against the 13th seeds in the round of 32, to reach the last 16. There, they were defeated by the top seeds from India. Walsh & Smith reached the same stage and lost out to the fourth seeds from the host nation.

Price & Rayner enjoyed a good win in the last 64 but then went out to the third seeds from Spain, while Siraj & Naphat Boonyaprapa and Daish & Maitiu Heckmann of Ireland exited in their first matches at the last-32 stage, to the seventh and eighth seeds respectively.
