England’s interest in the Croatia Open has ended after Liam Pitchford was defeated in the last 32.

The Chesterfield player, who was seeded ninth, was defeated 4-3 by world No 125 Ovidiu Ionescu of Romania.

Afterwards, Pitchford tweeted: “Didn’t play bad just some stupid mistakes at the end cost me! Time to focus on European Games now.”

Also in action in Zagreb were Sam Walker – who reached the last 16 of the Under-21 Men’s Singles – David McBeath and Sam Mabey.
