The two favourites both won again in round three of the British League Premier Division but in the case of Barrow it wasn’t without a major scare. Few people gave Sycamore’s Sam Perry a chance against England no. one Paul Drinkhall.
Sam clearly hadn’t read the script and by going for broke and by fighting for every point as if his life depended on it the England no. 32 amazingly forged a 2-0 lead. Drinkhall was in trouble again in a dramatic fourth end and he was very relieved to ease home in the decider after a truly spell-binding match (8-11, 11-13, 11-6, 13-11, 11-4). Gavin Rumgay was also extended to five ends by newcomer Omkar Torgalkar, a 23 year-old student at East London University who had beaten Gareth Herbert the day before. Gavin had to pull out all the stops as his lightning quick opponent found his range in the second half of the match. Gavin eventually won 11-6, 11-5, 5-11, 9-11, 13-11. Expect Mr. Torgalkar to make quite an impact during his stay in the country. Sycamore were determined not to go home empty-handed and Daniel Lowe and Jason Ramage both scored excellent wins over Barrow no. four England no. 48 Jonathan Crawford to make the score a very respectable 6-2.
Drumchapel Glasgow went one better, and they beat Ormesby 7-1. Drumchapel raced into a 6-0 lead with Ryan Jenkins giving little away against Michael Marsden (11-8, 11-8, 11-5) and John Murphy (11-7, 12-10, 11-3). Ormesby struck in the seventh game and England no. 44 Zak Zilesnick hit the jack-pot with a sensational victory over England no. 11 Gareth Herbert. The longer the game went on the more comfortable England no. four Junior Zak looked and he eventually won 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10. A great game for Zak who had also extended Craig Howieson to deep in the fifth end, before the very stylish Scottish no. two won 15-17, 11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8.
Fusion stay top after beating DHS Greenhouse Progress 6-2, although their fourth round opponents Drumchapel Gasgow may have something to say about that.
This was a marathon match which finished an hour after the first match was completed, and “Team of the weekend” Fusion won three of the five five- setters. Lorestas Trumpuskas was involved in two of these he missed out against Jason Sugrue 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11 but he beat Daniel Basterfield 11-7, 11-5, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8. National Junior Champion – England no 97 Senior Basterfield is clearly well under-ranked and he did well to beat England no.49 Emran Hussain 11-15, 13-11, 9-11, 10-12, 11-6.
BATTS will be pleased with their performance against Westfield not only did it represent their first points of the Season but Wang Zheng, Craig Bryant and Thomas Bennborn all stayed undefeated. The very experienced Bennborn didn’t drop an end as he beat Lewis Gray 11-9, 11-3, 11-6 and Shaun Marples 11-7, 14- 12, 11-5. Wang Zheng also impressed. He beat Shaun Marples 13-11, 11-4, 11-7 as well as Richard Andrews 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.
