England’s men and women both made the perfect start to the team event at the Commonwealth Championships in Surat, India.

The men’s squad of David McBeath, Helshan Weerasinghe, Tom Jarvis and Alex Ramsden beat both Wales and Northern Ireland 3-0.

The women’s line-up of Karina Le Fevre, Tin-Tin Ho and Maria Tsaptsinos saw off Trinidad & Tobago 3-0 and Wales 3-2.

McBeath came from 2-1 down to Wales’ Michael Marsden to get England off to a winning start, Weerasinghe beat Chris Griffiths 3-0 and Jarvis completed the victory 3-1 against Callum Evans.

Ramsden came into the team against Northern Ireland and sealed the second overall victory with a 3-2 win over Zak Wilson after Jarvis beat Ashley Robinson 3-0 and Weerasinghe defeated Paul McCreery 3-1.

Ho, Le Fevre and Tsaptsinos all won 3-0 against their Caribbean opponents but had to fight against Wales, coming from 1-0 down and then seeing a 2-1 lead pegged back before Le Fevre overcame Chloe Thomas in four.

The men face Singapore, South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday, while the women’s opponents will be Singapore and Sri Lanka.
