Norfolk ahead in Junior Division

The first round of matches in this season’s County Championships Junior Division 2c was played recently at Bedford Modern School and at the end of three matches each it is Norfolk who lead the way after three straight victories as they recorded 7-3 victories against Northants seconds and Cambridgeshire and an 8-2 victory over Suffolk.

Norfolk fielded the same five players in their three matches with Will Lawes, playing at number one leading the way with six wins from six and he was well supported by teammates, Jordan Gabriel and Rhiannon Evans who each dropped just one set and with Sam Rock chipping in with four wins and Vicky Last picking up two wins the East Anglian side eased to their three victories.

Shropshire ended the weekend one point adrift of Norfolk having won two and drawn one of their three matches and despite their draw against Suffolk they are still in contention and have Norfolk to play when the sides meet in January.

Shropshire may even consider themselves slight favourites for this division as they managed the first round of fixtures with only one girl player as Jamie Davies, Zak Chambers, George Powis and Ellis Pope played their three matches without a full team.

Despite having only dropped one point, if Shropshire field a full team when the sides all meet up again in a few weeks time they may feel confident of overhauling their opponents and shows that there is plenty still to play for in this division.
