BATTS scored their second win of the day by defeating DHS Greenhouse Progress 5-3. They stormed into a 3-0 lead as Wang Zheng beat Daniel Basterfield (3-0), Craig Bryant defeated Ashley Willetts (3-1)and Thomas Bennborn got the better of Sherwin Remata 3-0. Igor Morais hit back with an excellent win over Martin Kubrt (3-1) but it wasn’t enough and BATTS secured victory with Wang Zheng and Thomas Bennborn both completing an excellent afternoon’s work as BATTS raced into a 5-1 lead.
With nothing to lose England no. one Cadet Igor Morais (a real TTK / Greenhouse success story) who trains 12 hours a week at the West London Academy and at the London Progress Club, battled his way to one of the best wins of the weekend with a superb 13-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9 success against experienced England no.18 Craig Bryant. A suitably impressed Sherwin Remata made the score 3-5 by fighting back from 2-0 down to beat Martin Kubrt 8-11, 8- 11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6.
Ormesby and Sycamore produced what was surprisingly the only drawn match of the weekend. Zak Zilesnick won both of his singles for Ormesby with excellent wins over Jason Ramage (3-1) and Sam Perry (again 3-1)but he was never in contention for the Player of the Match Award. That went to Omkar Torgalkar for his two magnificent wins : 11-7,11-8, 11-9 against Michael Marsden and 13-11, 9- 11, 11-9, 11-9 against John Murphy. When he had entered the hall on Saturday morning few people had heard of Omkar Torgalkar – he may well find himself in great demand after this weekend. The Sycamore talisman Jason Ramage secured the draw by beating Nigel Eckersley 12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4 in what was the last game of the weekend.
Fusion felt the full force of Drumchapel Glasgow’s bid to capture the title for a third time, and they were beaten 7-1 – their first defeat of the weekend. Gareth Herbert set the tone in the first game with a clinical destruction of Sule Olaleye 11-8, 11-8, 11-8, his best performance of the two days. Gareth also impressed in his second singles beating Adelele Kaseem Adisa 11-9, 11-9, 11-7. Craig Howieson made his mark by beating Adelele Kaseem Adisa 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 and he rounded off a very good performance by the two times Champions by beating Tommy Cutler 11-7, 12-10, 11-6. England no. 16 Senior and no. one Veteran Lorestas Trumpauskas was on target for Fusion with a fine four game win over Terry Young (11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7).
Leaders Barrow scored their most comfortable win of the two days – a 7-1 success against a three –player Westfield. Paul Drinkhall and Gavin Rumgay both picked up doubles whilst Darius Knight beat Shaun Marples. England no. seven Junior Lewis Gray was on target for Westfield and he scored a fine five game victory over England no. 85 Senior Scott Crawford 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11- 5.
