Liam McTiernan provided one of the biggest shocks in recent British League history with an outstanding straight sets victory over Michael O’Driscoll, ranked #11 in England.

The youngster had been in impressive form throughout the weekend, but he propelled to new heights with victory over O’Driscoll, showcasing flamboyancy and athleticism at its finest throughout.

It was a deserved victory for one of England’s brightest prospects, who undoubtedly has a big future in the game.

McTiernan could not contain his delight after the game, labeling the victory as the best in his career.

“I’m over the moon to be honest. I can’t say I ever expected to beat him but I just kept digging away and everything just worked as I hoped it would.

“It’s definitely the greatest victory in my career so far, Michael is one of the best players in the country and I am delighted to have beat him, hopefully there will be more results like that to come in the future.”

It was uncharted territory for McTiernan, who was making his first British League Premier appearance following his arrival at Wymondham, and he revealed that the experience had been a massive learning curve in his development.

“It’s just a different standard all together. Everything is so quick and unforgiving. There are no easy games whatsoever and to be playing this quality of table tennis game in, game out has been a massive education for me and it will help me massively going forward.”

Meanwhile, Wymondham teammate and Captain Ian McLean praised the attitude of both McTiernan and Jared Patel, whilst also declaring that the British League offered young players an ideal platform to develop their game.

“It’s been a pleasure to watch the youngsters that we’ve had this week. Their sporting credentials and sportsmanship has been incredible. I can truly see that whoever has been behind Liam and Jared in their career have been outstanding role models to them. They’re respectful, graceful and they’ve been a credit to themselves, their clubs and their families.

“I think the players have grown into the role and Liam’s result against Michael is proof that players should access this stage whenever possible because the development has been on display throughout the week.”
