Sam Walker has today won his groups in both the men’s singles and the under-21 event at the Hungarian Open – and then advanced through the first knockout round of the age group contest.

Walker followed up yesterday’s under-21 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-5) victory over David Klaus of Austria by beating Switzerland’s Elia Schmid also in three straight (13-11, 11-8, 11-6) this morning to go through to a preliminary round last-32 clash against Nandor Ecseki of Hungary. And he duly advanced with a 3-1 (11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9) victory.

Walker was also on court in the men’s draw and beat Admir Duranspahic of Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-2 (11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9) in Group 38.

That built on yesterday’s victory over Sebastian Moavro of Argentina, whom the Worksop teenager beat 4-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-3) and meant he topped the group to set up a tie against Jeremy Petiot of France in the preliminary round of 64 at 7.15pm tonight.

David McBeath is also competing in Budapest and he yesterday he saw off Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes 4-1 (11-7, 11-9, 11-6, 16-18, 11-7) in Group 22. Today, he lost his second and final group match against Alexandre Robinot of France 4-1 (12-10, 7-11, 8-11, 7-11, 8-11).

McBeath and Walker team up for a doubles clash against Deni Kozul and Ludvik Persolja of Slovenia at 4.30pm today.
