With the Liebherr Men’s World Cup soon approaching over the horizon, it has become the fastest selling event in ETTA history and there’s plenty of time left for you to watch the new Olympic Champion in action.

For the first time ever the Men’s World Cup will be heading to England and, for those who didn’t manage to get Olympic tickets, or who can’t travel south for the Games, the Echo Arena in Liverpool provides the perfect opportunity to watch top-class table tennis.

It’s the first international competitive event after the Olympics and it will feature both the current holder of the World Cup, Zhang Jike, as well as the new Olympic Champion crowned in London.

In a high-class field littered with the best the world has to offer there will also be the strongest player from each continent (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Oceana) as well as the top eight players from the world ranking list.

There will also be two wildcards and a representative from England giving the event a truly worldwide appeal when it takes place over the weekend of the 28th-30th September.

It’s an exciting time for English sport and in particular, table tennis. Although the European Olympic Qualification campaign for our six stars ended in disappointment there were a number of big shocks recorded to boost home hopes ahead of the main event in July.

Paul Drinkhall recorded excellent wins over Andrej Gacina (CRO, 58) and Yaroslav Zhmudenko (UKR, 98) 4-2 and 4-1 respectively while his partner Joanna Parker also upset the odds twice in wins over Yana Noskova (RUS, 82) and Katarzyna Grzybowska (POL, 101) both 4-2.

Liam Pitchford also continued his fine form to beat Spain’s Carlos Machado (84) 4-1.

As the countdown continues to London 2012 (there are just 92 days to go) Olympic spirit is building up across the country and, if you haven’t seen it already, you can watch Team GB’s 100 days to go video here:
