How’s this for imagination and dexterity in the heat of battle?
England’s Liam Pitchford played not just one but two amazing behind-the-back shots during his last-32 clash with Jun Mizutani in the Austrian Open. Not surprisingly, the magic moments were chosen as the ITTF’s Stiga Point of the Day and have caused a sensation on social media.
The first was a clean winner, leaving his bemused Japanese opponent flat-footed as the ball sped across court before he could react.
The second saw Mizutani return the ball long, bringing up a match point for Pitchford. He didn’t take that chance but went on to win 4-3 to set up a clash with European champion Timo Boll in the last 16.
Liam said: “I didn’t plan it. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever done it on camera. There were two in one match, so I don’t know what to say. Did you get them on video? That’s going viral that one. I don’t really practise it but I have long arms so it’s a bit easier.”
