The European stand-off you've been waiting for: Boll vs Pitchford

This weekend when all the drama is happening at the Hungarian Open with plenty of English talent on show, English number one Liam Pitchford will be competing in one of the biggest events of his life in the 2012 Energis Masters in which he faces Timo Boll and Werner Schlager!

The event is taking place in Germany at the new venue of Sportzentrum St. Wendel where 12 of the world’s top players will meet to battle it out for the title.

The company in which the 19-year-old from Derbyshire will be keeping himself is astonishing.

As mentioned earlier he shares a group with former World Champion Werner Schlager as well as current World number four Timo Boll. Also at the event will be the considerable talent of Patrick Baum, Kirill Skachkov, Wang Xi, Jorgen Persson, Jan-Ove Waldner, Steffen Fetzner, Chen Weixing, Robert Svensson and last year’s winner Li Ping.

It will be great experience for Liam to play Schlager and Boll and, while we don’t expect much in terms of the way of results, what a boost taking something out of those players would be. He could then take that into the Slovenian Open next week where he will join the other English players in competition.

The tournament will begin at 10:00 GMT.

Groups:

1: Boll, Schlager, Pitchford

2: Baum, Skachkov, Wang Xi

3: Persson, Waldner, Fetzner

4: Chen Weixing, Li Ping, Svensson
