The one really good thing about having a decent grading system which is renown for its accuracy means that, as well as being able to stage enjoyable handicap tournaments, the possibility of tiered events are also very much to the fore.
The Leicester League run several such cup competitions for grading levels below, respectively, 210, 170, 140 and 115 which ensures that pretty well all levels get a meaningful competition to aim at.
The Knighton Park club was involved in two such matches in the Frith Trophy (under 140) which both resulted 5-4, one for and one against. It was the one against that was eventually won by Regent Sports when KP A lost. The scores show how tight it was with the match reaching 4-4 and then Tim Cawston (Regent) found himself 8-10 down in the fifth game of that final set against Martin Pember, somehow finding the resolve to win four successive points for the 12-10 victory. Cawston won two as did team mate, Stu Jones, Alan Clarke notching the vital one. For KP Robert Geary and Ashley Palmer both won two.
KP B won 5-4 against Abbots Road after being 2-4 down. Patrick Cox, who has done so well Internationally in the disabled side of the sport, won all three for KP to bring his side to 3-4 and then Mike Smith and Chris Parmar-Saville both won nail biting climaxes to ease over the line. The Abbots Road team of Tosh Singh, Hemant Parekh and Aftab Gaffar were devastated.
Two of the unbeaten sides met in Division One, resulting in a share of the spoils at 5-5. Trevor Kerry won a fine maximum for Unicorn but Ajax Wolvey were at least their match in depth with Jon Williams and Aiden Walsh winning two and one for Mick Alsopp. Tim Sheppard won the other for Unicorn who also took the all important doubles.
There is no getting by Thringstone’s Maurice Newman this season so far as Abbots Road found to their cost as Thringstone powered to a 7-3 win. Newman’s maximum was ably backed by two from Phil Jones, while John Lenton chipped in with one. For Abbots, Ali Ahmed won two while Fahed Sacoor, playing up from Division Three, only just lost to Lenton 11-9 in the fifth, an almost perfect baptism.
