REVIEW OF LEICESTER LEAGUE
Ajax Wolvey and Unicorn remain locked at the top of Division One, highly unusual in the case of Ajax who were promoted from the second division last term, albeit with high credentials, while Unicorn have two top players who are new to the Leicester League.
Ajax beat Holwell 10-0 with Jon Williams, Mick Allsop and Aidan Walsh remaining in superb form, while Unicorn had a debutant in Joe Lindsay against Knighton Park 2nds who, nevertheless won two to supplement three each from Trevor Kerry and Tim Sheppard in a 9-1 victory. Adil Rashid won the one for Park.
The performance of the week came from Knighton Park’s Tobit Dehnen, surely the most improved player in the league this season. For the Park’s first team he won three and, along the way, defeated the hitherto unbeaten Dave Gannon 13-11 in a pulsating fifth game. With two each from Karen Smith and Adam Cross it meant the Park won comfortably at 8-2 with Gannon winnign the two.
Syston Casuals are struggling at the bottom of Division Two, their latest result a 9-1 defeat at the hands of Blaby and Whetstone for whom John Winsper and Eileen Schaler each notched three, while Dave Daniels won two. For Syston Paul Weston’s win over Daniels was a good one.
Knighton Park 3rds remain top despite only a 5-5 draw against Syston’s first string. George McClurkin and Reza Kiani both won two for Park and a three-straight doubles, McClurkin’s win over Jason Woodfield a particularly good one. Woodfield and John Szostack each won two for Syston and Ian Wetherley one in a terrific tussle.
Meanwhile Newfoundpool could catch Knighton Park if they win their match in hand. Their latest success came when they won the last six sets to beat Regent Sports 7-3 thanks largely to a maximum from Steve Day, with two for Mike James and one from Matt Wells. Martin Bolton won two for Regent while Charlie Bateman had an excellent success against Wells.
James Lancaster was man of the match for Arnesby against Knighton Park fifth in a 5-5 draw as no-one got the better of him. Nile Lovett and Dave Wagstaff supported with one each while Jack Mooney won two for Park and one each for Zack Moss and Max Lewis-Clarke.
