Desford Village first team solidified their position at the top of Division Two in the Leicester & District League with an overwhelming 10-0 success over Great Glen who are by no means one of the lower teams in this division.

Tony Smith, Neil Matthams and Malcolm Truman were absolutely relentless on the night and now lead by eight points.

Second, and taking advantage of two others in the mix sharing points, are Holwell Sports II who had a similar 10-0 victory over Regent Sports who are normally vying for one of the top two positions themselves. In this case it was Dave Roche, Tony Fox and Mike James doing the damage. Having come up from division three last term they are determined to keep the upward movement going.

Meanwhile the team who were second, Abbots Road, battled in vain against a slightly deeper in depth Electricity III who had Steve White turning the years back with a spearheading maximum which was supported by two from Russ Pettitt while John Winsper lobbed a very useful victory into the mix in a 6-4 success for the Sparks. Geoff Hancock took two for Abbots, Fahed Sacoor one and the doubles.

This puts Holwell second on 20 points while Electricity are one behind on 19 as are Abbots who at least gained a useful point in their loss to make runners-up spot a very interesting contest at the moment.

Mixed blessings for two of the Knighton Park teams vying for promotion at the top of Division Three when the fifth and seventh teams drew 5-5 at least maintaining points when a loss would have been a big disappointment for the losers but, at the same time, would have given the winners a boost.

Amardeep Gudela continues his impressive first season in the league with another three-straight maximum for the seventh team and is obviously capable of higher things, while Martin Pember picked up one and these two won the so important doubles. Good team effort by the fifth with two apiece from Ruben Dehnen and Eddie Kwok and a win for Steve Adams.

Good to see Andy Wright back for Electricity V and on the winning trail, taking all three against Unicorn IV in a 7-3 victory, two for Dan Woolman and one by Bryan Moylan. Eric Baker took two for Unicorn.

These two clubs exchanged fixtures when their other two teams in this division also clashed, this time Unicorn III coming out on top against the Sparks’ fourth team by 8-2, Jacob Sharp and Justin Ho both undefeated for Unicorn, Jordan Tweed coming in with one. One each for Chris Woodward and Sheriff Makhani for Electricity.

At the top of the individual averages four have now lost one: Gudela 17-16, Wright 12-11, Sharp 12-11 and Simon Aldis 11-10, the latter with no match this week.

Syston Casuals lead Division Four and did their chances no harm in beating Nomads III 9-1 when evergreen Terry Highton beat Nick Bishop for the losers. Ian Lockington and Wes Glauds were both undefeated for Syston, Bishop winning his other two.

Lutterworth are challenging strongly but only just got the better of Winstanley Wizards II by 6-4 thanks to maximums by Mike Eastell and Colin Jones, the latter still unbeaten overall. For the Wizards, Ben Cooke, Frankie Hallam and Nathan Joseph all took one to ensure a point while the first two also won the doubles.

Nomads’ second team battled out a 5-5 draw with Blaby and Whetstone when Chris Weston and Terry Wale both recorded a brace for Nomads and then won the doubles, Weston losing his unbeaten record to Tom Phipps who recorded a very useful maximum for Blaby who came up from division four last term. Supporting Phipps with one each were Alan Willson and Ian Knight.

Nipping to the top of the tree there was a thrilling 5-5 draw in Division One between Thringstone and Holwell Sports when five sets needed five games while the other five were won in three. David Arrowsmith won all three for Thringstone, Trevor Kerry two. A good team effort by Holwell with two for Robin Pearce, one each for Mark Green and Adam Feargrieve and then Pearce and Feargrieve grabbed the doubles in five games for a share of points.

Knighton Park III are still looking for their first victory after promotion with Oscar Bentley, Dan Andrews and Himansu Mishra all taking one. But Harry White and Adam Pettitt ensured full points for Electricity II, unbeaten in singles and doubles.
