Ormesby’s Karina Le Fevre has been given a major boost in her transition between her junior and senior table tennis career thanks to a grant from the Stanley Proffitt  Award distributed by the Swaythling Club International.

The 18-year-old from Thornaby in Teesside, who is currently ranked at number 5 in the England Senior list and has represented England in five successive European Youth Championships as well as being the UK Schools’ Champion and England Masters Champion on two occasions, has travelled to China this week for four weeks training, together with coach Alan Cooke and other leading members of the England team.

National coach Cooke, who invited Karina to join the visit, feels that this is just the type of experience and training that can make the difference to Karina in her bid to bridge the gap between Junior and Senior table tennis.

The late Stanley Proffitt was a former English international player and one of the group of players from Manchester who dominated the sport in his era.  Stan bequeathed as part of his will some funds to the Swaythling Club International to help youngsters throughout the world to develop their table tennis skills.  Karina is the first player from England to receive this award.

The Swaythling Club president is Mrs Diane Schöler, the former Diane Rowe, one of England’s world champions at the time when England was one of the leading teams in the international arena.
