Paul Cicchelli – Open Singles Winner
The Lancashire Closed Table Tennis Championships were held at Garstang Community Academy over the weekend of 30th/31st May 2015.
A great entry of over 70 competitors took part over the two days in Junior, Veterans & Ladies events on the Saturday and Senior events on the Sunday.
Saturday
The Open Junior Singles was won by Amirul Hussain over Daniel Olsberg.
Daniel then went on to win the Junior Banded event over Michael Lennon.
The Veterans Singles was won by Thomas Haddley against Steve Scowcroft and the Over 50’s by David Griffith against Steve Green.
The Ladies and Junior Girls Singles were both won by Beth Farnworth over Fliss Pickard and Alice Dillon respectively.
Sunday
The Open Singles saw the top 4 seeds progress through to the semi-finals. In the first semi-final, Jack Dempsey progressed through to the final with a 3-1 win over Charles Musa, whilst the second semi-final saw a very close win for Paul Cicchelli (13-11 in the 5th game) over Thomas Haddley. Paul then went on to win the final with a 3-1 victory over Jack to take the winner’s prize.
The Open Doubles resulted in the pairing of Jack Dempsey & Steve Green gaining a 3-0 victory over Thomas Haddley & Steve Scowcroft.
The Open Singles Banded event final saw a 3-0 win for Nick Mooney over Miles Benjamin, but only after Nick had several tense 3-2 wins in the earlier rounds.
Apart from the Open Doubles, which was a straight knockout events, all the other events on both days started with Groups of 3 or 4 competitors.
A marvellous days table tennis and a great opportunity to compete against players from other Lancashire Leagues, thanks to Jim Bolton for organising and Garstang TTC for providing an excellent venue and refreshments during the weekend.
