Tom Jarvis has stormed into the last 16 of the Polish Open, but there was heartbreak for Tin-Tin Ho in the last 32.

Jarvis held off a determined Manav Thakkar of India in the last 64, three times seeing his opponent -ranked 29 places above him at 147 – level the score before Jarvis took the decider 11-9.

His last-32 tie was more straightforward as Jarvis opened a 3-0 lead and then took the fifth after Iranian opponent Amin Ahmadian (WR 201) had pulled one back.

Jarvis will face a stiff challenge in the last 16 on Saturday as he plays Jakub Dyjas of the host nation, the No 7 seed and world No 73.

Ho, seeded 21 in the women’s singles, was up against Rachel Moret, the 15th seed and world No 79, 21 places above her in the rankings.

It all looked good when Ho took the first three games without being unduly troubled, but her opponent found a higher gear to win the next three with something to spare. The decider was easily the tightest game of the match and it was Moret who edged it 12-10.

Ho earlier beat Italy’s Jamila Laurenti (WR 212) in six games in the last 64.
