Sixth seed Takuto Izumo of Japan was Tom Jarvis’ nemesis at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open.
The Skegness teenager was seeded 32 for the Junior Boys’ Singles and duly reached the last 32 with a 4-1 victory over Nicholas Frigiolini of Italy (11-8, 8-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6).
But he found eventual semi-finalist Izumo too good, slipping to a 4-0 defeat, though it was a lot closer than the scoreline suggested as Jarvis went down (10-12, 11-13, 5-11, 8-11).
Elsewhere in the singles, Luke Savill and Alex Ramsden qualified from their groups to reach the main draw, each with two wins from three matches, but were both eliminated in the first knockout round. Joe Clark was eliminated in the group stage, winning one of his three matches.
Jarvis and Izumo clashed again in the team competition as England ran second seeds Japan mighty close. Jarvis appeared to have learned a lot from defeat as the result was much closer, Jarvis leading 2-1 before succumbing 3-2 in another close match (11-8, 9-11, 14-12, 12-14, 9-11).
Earlier in the tie, Jarvis defeated Yukiya Uda 3-2 (6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9) and Savill beat Aoto Asazu 3-1 (11-6, 11-9, 2-11, 11-8) as England led 2-1 before suffering overall defeat.
They had earlier lost by the same score to Germany B, with Jarvis contributing a 3-1 victory over Nils Hohmeier (6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6) and Ramsden beating Alexander Gerhold 3-2 (11-3, 9-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-9) as England again led the tie 2-1.
In the doubles, Jarvis & Luke Savill were handed a bye into the last 32, where they had the misfortune to face top seeds and eventual runners-up Darko Jorgic of Sovenia & Tomas Polanksy of the Czech Republic. But they acquitted themselves well in a 3-2 defeat (14-12, 6-11, 11-9, 4-11, 6-11). Clark & Ramsden were beaten in their first match by a Swedish pair.
In the Junior Girls’ Singles, Emily Bolton, Kate Cheer and Denise Payet were eliminated in the group stages, although Bolton and Cheer managed a win apiece.
In the doubles, Bolton & Cheer went out in the first round but Payet and her Serbian partner Edina Benko reached the last 32, where they were defeated by third seeds Yu-Jhun Li & Po-Hsuan Lin of Taipei, who went on to win the competition.
In the team event, England were beaten 3-0 by Belgium and 3-1 by Germany B in the group stage. Payet got them on the board against Germany, defeating Jennie Wolf 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 12-14, 11-5, 12-10).
The Cadet team event also took place on Friday, while the singles and doubles begin today (Saturday). A full report will follow at the end of the competition.
