Tom Jarvis joined Paul Drinkhall in the main draw of the Portugal Open with a five-set victory over Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka.

The 19-year-old moved into a 3-0 lead but saw his opponent peg him back in a close fourth game, before taking the next 11-4 to book his place in the last 64.

He next plays Robin Devos of Belgium while Drinkhall, who was seeded into the main draw, will play China’s Niu Guankai.

Jarvis was knocked out in the last 32 of the Under-21 Men’s Singles, however, by Antonino Amato of Italy in a deciding fifth set.

In the Women’s SIngles, both Tin-Tin Ho and Maria Tsaptsinos went out, to opponents from Portugal and China respectively.

In the doubles, Jarvis & Drinkhall went out 3-1 to Czech opponents, while Tsaptsinos & Emily Bolton were defeated by a pair from Belarus. Ho, partnering Karoline Mischek of Austria, went out to opponents from Chinese Taipei.
