Tom Jarvis battled back from 3-1 down and won a deciding seventh set 14-12 to advance to the next round of the Portugal Open.

The 19-year-old was trailing to Irvin Bertrand of France in the second preliminary round of the Men’s Singles in Lisbon before his superb fightback to move into the third preliminary round, where he faces Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka tomorrow. Paul Drinkhall has a bye into the main draw.

Maria Tsaptsinos had a 4-2 victory over a Greek opponent in the first preliminary round of the Women’s Singles and next plays Hu Limei  of China. Emily Bolton went out, however, in five sets to an opponent from Chinese Taipei.

Tin-Tin Ho had a bye into the second preliminary round, where she faces Liu Yangzi of Portugal.

In the Under-21 events, Jarvis had a 3-0 victory over Bogdan Singeorzan of Romania in the last 64 and next faces Italy’s Antonino Amato. However, Ho and Bolton were defeated in the Round of 64 in the women’s competition, though Bolton took her Norwegian opponent to a decider.

The doubles contests get under way tomorrow, with Jarvis and Drinkhall teaming up, Bolton playing alongside Tsaptsinos and Ho partnered with Karoline Mischek of Austria.
