Tom Jarvis and David McBeath are into the main draw of the Portugal Open, to join 14th seed Paul Drinkhall.
Jarvis overcame Pedro Osiro of Switzerland (WR 394) 4-2 in the first preliminary round, followed by an emphatic 4-0 win over Nigeria’s Taiwo Mati (WR 315) to book his place in the last 64, while McBeath had a 4-1 win over Belgium’s Florian Cnudde (WR 202), followed up by a confident win in four straight against Lorenzo Santiago of Argentina (WR 324).
The pair also teamed up to win their first match in the doubles, overcoming Norwegian pair Borgar Haug & Adrian Wetzel in three straight. They went out in the next round to Alexander Chen & David Serdaroglu of Austria.
Jarvis is also into the quarter-finals of the Under-21 Men’s Singles, having won his first three matches, culminating in a four-game victory over second seed Bastien Rembert of France.
Matthew Daish was beaten in five by Thailand’s Padasak Tanviriyavechakul in the first preliminary round of the men’s event but made it through to the second round of the under-21s, coming from 2-1 down to defeat Abdulla Albalooshi of the UAE. However, he went out in the next round to American Nikhil Kumar.
Sam Mabey was beaten in his opening Men’s Singles match by Aliaksandr Khanin of Belarus, ranked No 150 in the world. Mabey & Daish went out in the first preliminary round of the Men’s Doubles to Jiri Martinko of the Czech Republic & Moldova’s Andrei Putuntica.
