Tom Jarvis and Tin-Tin Ho led the English challenge at the 2014 Polish Junior and Cadet Open with both players managing excellent runs to the quarter-finals of their respective singles competitions.
Jarvis, in the cadet boys, and Ho, in the junior girls, both fought their way to the last eight having recorded shock wins over higher ranked players.
One of the most spectacular victories in Poland was Tin-Tin’s 4-2 triumph over tournament top seed and world U18 no. 17 Ayane Morita (JPN). Having won her group comfortably and beaten off the challenge of fellow European Kristyna Stefcova (CZE) in the last 32, the world U18 no. 43 stunned the Polish crowd by felling the tournament favourite within six games.
Unfortunately for the English youngster, her fine run was ended one stage later in the quarter-finals when she met German Alena Lemmer, who proved too strong as the U18 world no. 32 won in a tight five ends.
With none of the English junior or cadet squads managing to make an impression during the team events, it was left to Jarvis to rekindle home hopes and he delivered in style with six consecutive wins taking him to a quarter-final against Japanese cadet Koyo Kanamitsu (JPN).
Jarvis, ranked 38 in the U15 world list, had already shocked world no. 34 Abdullah Yigenler (TUR) 3-0 in his group before picking up two more outstanding victories over world no. 29 Anton Kotov (RUS) and world no. 13 Gerrit Engemann (GER) to make the last eight.
Alongside just two other European players, Romanian’s Cristian Pletea and Rares Sipos, Jarvis made his final stand against world no. 8 Kanamitsu. However, the Japanese youngster’s speed and technique proved just too much, despite the Englishman closing the score in each game, he fell to a 3-0 defeat to end English interest in Wladyslawowo.
