Cambridge took the overall honours in the table tennis Varsity Match, although the men’s first-team match was drawn for the first time since 1992.

The Light Blues won the women’s match 10-0, with only two matches going beyond three games.

The men’s second team encounter was almost as one-sided as Cambridge took it 9-1, although there were a couple of five-setters on the way.

In the men’s firsts, there were no fewer than four five-game matches, with both teams winning two of them.

Going in to the final match, Oxford were leading 5-4. On the day’s form, the Oxford pair of Michael Hahn and Kristofer Hammarback should have beaten the Cambridge pair of Marco Wong and Hampton Tao and they started well in taking the first 11-8.

However, Wong and Tao settled down and came out on top 3-1 (8-11, 11-2, 11-8, 11-8) in front of two sets of noisy supporters at the Iffley Road sports complex in Oxford.
