Maria Tsaptsinos and Tin-Tin Ho are through to the last 16 in the doubles

Tin-Tin Ho and Maria Tsaptsinos are flying the flag for England’s Juniors into day two of the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open.

The pair teamed up to make it through to the last 16 of the girls’ doubles, where they will face Marie Migot of France and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Mynarova on Thursday morning.

But Lois Peake, playing alongside Han-Yu Hsieh of Taipei was beaten in the round of 32 by a French pair, having earlier come from 2-1 down in the first round to beat Alaa Saad Fagr Shouman of Egypt.

In the singles, Ho was seeded through to the main draw and she was joined by Tsaptsinos, who came through her group with two wins and a defeat. Peake won her first group match but was then defeated in her two subsequent outings.

Ho and Tsaptsinos were both awarded a bye into the second round of the main draw, and Ho kept up her good form with a 4-1 win over Sweden’s Filippa Bergand to set up a last-32 clash against Slovakia’s Monika Urikova on Thursday morning.

But Tsaptsinos was unable to join her, being beaten 4-1 (11-7, 7-11, 10-12, 9-11, 5-11) by Leonie Hartbrich of the host nation.

In the boys’ events, Tom Jarvis was the best-performing English player, winning all three group matches and getting a bye into the second round where he lost to Jakub Folwarski, who at No 143 is ranked more than 80 places above Jarvis in the ITTF Under-18 rankings.

Sam Mabey also reached the main draw thanks to a courageous group performance. Having lost his first match, he was trailing 1-0 in the second, but won a marathon second game 20-18 to set himself on the way to a 3-1 victory.

He then came from 2-0 down in his final match to win 3-2 and set up a tie against Victor Gullbo of Sweden in the first round. Again, Mabey showed great fight to twice come from behind to level at 3-3, only to lose the decider.

Danny Lawrence lost his three group matches, although he took his first opponent to five sets, but he got a tick in the win column in his first doubles match as he and Mabey saw off a Franco-Austrian alliance, digging deep to take the third and fourth games by 13-11 and 16-14. However, they were beaten by a German pair in the last 32.

That stage was also the last stop for Jarvis and his Finnish partner Markus Myllarinen. The pair withstood a comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2 by their Swedish opponents in the first round but then let a 2-1 lead slip to be eliminated by a partnership from Belarus.

The Junior singles and doubles events conclude on Thursday, with team competition on Friday. The Cadet event also starts on Friday, when Harry Dai, Alex Ramsden, Denise Payet and Kate Cheer will be in action for England.
