Day 6 of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality European Youth Championships, a half day only with the first rounds of the Singles and the first two rounds of the Mixed Doubles
In the Singles only three of the players had first round matches and they all lost but in the Junior Boys it was by such tiny margins. Sean Cullen, 7 games, lost it deuce in the seventh game, 3 other deuces and 3 11-8 games, I doubt Sean had ever had a match to win or lose by such a tiny margin. Richard Andrews also lost in seven his Ukrainian opponent kept on winning one game and Richard kept on winning the next game. Problem was when it got to seven games there was no next game, Richard went out 4-11 in the seventh game.
In the Junior Girls Singles Natilie Slater found Lisa Fuchs of Austria just too strong for her, Natalie did take the fourth but the Austrian closed out the match with an 11-3 fifth game.
The Junior Mixed Doubles was a bit of a disaster too, all three pairs competing in the 2nd round were defeated. Chloe Whyte playing with a Hungarian partner Gergely Sabjan were just not quite good enough against the Russian pair Nikita Kirillov and Tatiana Ryabova, they did take the first game on deuce but after that the Russians were in charge winning two games 11-9 and the fourth and final one 11-5.
Sean Cullen and Lucy Davidson also fell at the first hurdle against Richard Lukacs of Hungary and Tessa Gonderinger of Luxembourg, the English pair took the third game but could do nothing more than delay the end as the fourth went to the opposition 11-8. Richard Andrews and Natalie Slater went the same way against a strong Romanian pair Lucian Munteanu and Cristina Alina Hirici, they did take the first 11-9 but the next three went to the Romanians.
Two pairs Liam Pitchford playing alongside Krisztina Ambrus of Hungary and David McBeath playing alongside Karina Le Ferve have byes to the third round and will start in the competition tomorrow.
There was better news from the Cadet Mixed, all three pairs successfully negotiated the first round. Sam Walker and Emily Bates disposed of a Finnish pair, Thomas Lundstrom and Pinja Eriksson, in three straight games. Helshan Weerasinghe and Tressa Armitage won in four games beating a Swiss pair Lionel Weber and Liza Schempp.
Igor Morais and Tin Tin Ho had a much harder battle with a good Slovakian pair Roman Rezetka and Adriana Cisarikova , the 16= seeds. The English pair triumphed in 5 games winning the fifth 11-4. A good win this one for the young English pair.
The individual Competition gets into full swing tomorrow with rounds of all events.
