Callum Evans of Wales won the Junior Boys Singles in the Tees Active supported Stockton-on-Tees Junior 4 Star Championships at the Thornaby Pavilion on Sunday, beating local Cleveland players in both the semi-final and the final.
Evans’ closest match was against Joe Clark, who came through to the semi-final after the withdrawal of Tom Jarvis. Evans won this by 11-3 in the decider after Clark had done well to take the match the distance. In the final, Evans defeated Clark’s Northfield team-mate Billy Forster in straight games.
Third seeded Forster came through his semi with straight games to win over Alec Ward.
Evans represented the Grantham College club in the Junior team event, winning his second title in combination with Joe Pilkington.
Grantham College A won the final against their own B team after a number of unexpected results in the bottom half of the draw. The victory in the final was 3-0 over Shaquille Webb Dixon and Nathan Butler.
Grantham B defeated the Lincolnshire team of Matthew Leete and William Hornsey by 3-1 in the semi-final and the Swerve A team of Alec Ward and Nuradin Muktar by 3-2 in the quarters.
Lincolnshire defeated the second seeds Northfield, whose team consisted of Billy Forster and Joe Clark, 3-1 in the quarters.
The Junior Girls’ Singles was won by Lancashire’s Emily Bolton, who beat Staffordshire’s Charlotte Bardsley in straight games in a comfortable final. Bolton’s toughest match was in the semi, where she beat the second seed Denise Payet. Payet came through in the same half of the draw after losing one match in her qualification group to the Cleveland player Katie Barlow from the Swerve Club. Bolton beat Payet in a hard fought match at 11-7 in the decider.
The Junior Girls’ team event was also won by Grantham College, who beat Scotland 3-1 in the final. Emily Bolton won both her matches and combined with Soffi Jenkins to win the doubles.
The Cadet Boys’ Singles winner was Yorkshire’s Harry Dai, who came through a tight final with another Yorkshire player, Shayan Siraj.
Dai beat Tom McIntosh of Nottingham in the quarters and another Yorkshire player, Ben Fillingham, in the semi both by 3-1. Siraj beat Durham’s Josh Weatherby in an excellent five-game match in the semi-final and Nottinghamshire-based Thailand’s Naphat Boonyarapa again in five games in the quarters.
The Cadet Boys’ team event was won by Ormesby A team of Dai and Weatherby, who beat Scotland 3-1 in the final, with Dai winning both his sets and the doubles with Weatherby.
There were more surprises in the Cadet Girls’ Singles, which was won by Mollie Patterson of Norfolk. To win the title Patterson beat Bardsley by 3-1 in the semi-final and Payet in the final. Payet reached the final by winning in straight games against Gari Duhan of Yorkshire in the semi-final after Duhan had beaten Jasmin Wong, also from Yorkshire, by 3-1 in the quarter final.
The Cadet Girls’ team event was won by the Ashford team of Lydia John and Danielle Kelly, who beat the top seeds Ormesby 3-2 in the final. Kelly and John both beat Ruby Chan and combined to win the doubles, whilst Wong won both her sets for Ormesby.
The under-12 Boys’ Singles winner was Middlesex-based Aadil Anand of India, who won a very close final against Naphong Boonyaprapa of Thailand. Boonyaprapa won the first two games before Anand came back and won the next three 11-9, 12-10, 14-12.
The under-12 Junior Girls’ Singles was won by Ruby Chan, who won comfortably in the semi-final against Lola McGhee of Cleveland and Anaya Patel of Berkshire in the final.
The prizes were presented by the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees Councillor Ian Dalgarno and by the Cleveland County Chairman Colin Davison.
